Sustainable Energy and Transport
By the end of this lesson you will be able to list a number of ways that man is able to save energy for use in the home and for transport. You will also be able to illustrate a number of transport issues and solutions around these issues.
Activity 1 - What is sustainable energy?
In pairs, think about the term ‘Sustainable Energy’. What does this term mean? Write down everything you can think of. The best way to achieve this is to take
a piece of paper – one person write something down on it and then passes it to the next person who writes something down etc.

Key questions to think about from the video
1.What is the world population predicted to be by 2050?
2.What does Denmark lead the world with?
3.Where does most of our energy come from?
4.Why has China embraced Nuclear power?

Activity 2
Think about all of the sustainable energy sources that you know of. Jot them down on paper and write the advantages and the disadvantages of them.
What sustainable energy sources do we have in New Zealand?
What sustainable energy sources do we have in New Zealand?
Wind Power
Wind power is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation and uses little land. Any effects on the environment are generally less problematic than those from other power sources.
Solar Power
Conversion of sunlight into power by the photoelectric effect. No carbon emissions and uses very little land.
Hydro-electric
Hydro-electric is flexible, low power costs, environmentally friendly. However there some disadvantages to Hydro-electric power – Eco system damage and loss of land,
siltation and flow shortages, Methane emission from reservoirs.

Activity 3
In a group of 5-6 students. Research a particular type of power source and present it to the class. You have 2 minutes to present your presentation where you all must speak. Your presentation must include –
1.Power source and why you have chosen it.
2.Why it is sustainable and how it promotes the sustainable use of the environment
3.Positives and negatives of the power source
4.Any other information you think is relevant

Sustainable Transport
Sustainable transport refers to any type of transport with very little or no impact on the environment. These include walking, cycling, battery powered cars, trams etc.
Activity 4
Draw a star chart of all of the types of sustainable transport you can think of. List all of the positives and negatives you can think of for each type of transport option as well as how the particular transport option promotes the sustainable use of the environment. See the picture below.
